Winnie the Pooh Meets John Prine
Marilyn Walker never really grew up. Even after a storied career as an ecologist, entrepreneur and bookstore owner, she’s still a kid at heart. So it makes perfect sense that her debut album, At the Jamboree, is for kids of all ages - a children’s album veiled within adult themes. The album (like its maker) is full of magic and mischief. Walker spreads joy and wisdom with songs about the riverways, mycelium, cephalopods, and angels in our midst.
Meet Marilyn
She's Got Something to Say
When Marilyn Walker discovered in late 2017 that she could not only write songs that she loved but that others would ask her to play again and again, she set out on a journey to become the professional singer-songwriter that she is today. Usually playing solo and accompanying herself on guitar, ukulele, and piano/keyboard, Marilyn’s songs range from 100% silly to deeply serious. Her deepest influences include the calypso, folk, and gospel of the 1960s, which were often played in her home. Her songs and music have been likened to John Prine, Willie Nelson, Christine Lavin, Carrie Newcomer, Tom Lehrer, and Mary Chapin Carpenter, among others. Truly, though, she is her own domain.
Connected by Music!
Why do I write and share music? For me, it’s a deep need to be connected. Creating songs, sharing those songs, and listening to songs is a profoundly impactful way to feel part of community. And sadly, a lack of community seems to be epidemic in our society today, creating a sense of aloneness for many.
I created Connected by Music, a nonprofit organization, as a way to allow musicians a means to use their music to support their passion. I take no salary or profit from my music income – it all goes to Connected by Music, which in turn donates the funds to nonprofits that are bettering the lives of women, children, and vulnerable youth. I also believe that music is a great vehicle to raise awareness, and my songs are an expression of my passion for a just and sustainable planet and society.
