Since You've Been Gone" emerged as a spontaneous piece of music, dropping into my consciousness with the first line: "I bought a half-baked ham at the Dollar Store, a loaf of shoes at the five and dime," complete with its melody and underlying jazz chords. I instantly loved it, finished the first verse, and shared it with friends. Their comment that it reminded them of John Prine (YES!) motivated me to finish writing the song.

The song is a nod to the torch jazz tradition, which centers on the phrase "to carry a torch for someone." "Since You've Been Gone" captures the profound sense of groundlessness that follows the loss of a loved one, though I intentionally leave the nature of that loss open for the listener to interpret. Notable torch jazz artists include Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.

Astounding jazz pianist and Colorado Music Hall of Fame member Eric Gunnison plays piano on this single. I was thrilled to see him transform my simple chord progression into the glorious piano part you hear. The track is further enhanced by bowed bass from Bradley Morse and percussion by Christian Teele. It's a departure from my usual work—so much so that my friends joke it's my new alter ego: "Marilyn at 5."
