READ ABOUT IT
Marilyn Walker never really grew up. Even after a storied career as an ecologist, entrepreneur, and bookstore owner, she’s still a kid at heart. This prolific songwriter focuses on writing and sharing wildly imaginative songs that inspire joy, compassion, connection, and hope. So it makes perfect sense that her debut album, At the Jamboree, is for kids of all ages - a children’s album veiled within adult themes. With Caribbean steel drums, Hawaiian ukulele, an oompah style polka groove and more joining guitar, banjo, bass, accordion, guitarrón, pedal steel, dobro, harp, piano, and drums, the album (like its maker) is full of magic and mischief. Whether crooning like Sinatra or howling like a wolf, Walker spreads joy and wisdom with songs about the fungus, cephalopods, and angels in our midst.
Marilyn’s songs are like short films. Your heart will pound with anticipation as a woman is chased cross-town by a zucchini grown out-of-control. You’ll join her in prayer to children across the world. Her career as a scientist often informs her lyrics, with songs about octopus, divine canines (because God is dog spelled backwards), and the fungus among us.
Marilyn’s care for the world and her passion for justice are backed by action—all proceeds from the album go to TGTHR We Can End Youth Homelessness, through Connected by Music, a Boulder-based nonprofit that provides aid to women, children and vulnerable youth.
And now for the songs!
You’re More Than a Good Dog: A hilarious, touching tribute to the unconditional love divine canines offer us, with a honky tonk piano vibe and an irresistible howl-along. Not every dog is necessarily a “good dog” in the strictest sense of the word, but they love us all the same, and we love them right back.
At the Jamboree: Once upon a time… there was a wild jamboree in a barn along 4-Mile “Crick,” where the animals danced until dawn, and the hens clucked time with the raccoons. Kick up your heels old timey dance music with a Winnie-the-Pooh feeling to the charming story. The excitement was infectious!
The Little White Donkey: The sounds of a Mexican mariachi band, with accordion and guitarrón, as well as cowbell and clip-clopping coconut halves, are the perfect background to a story of a globe-trotting donkey adored by all. Inspired by the groove of Jacques Ibert’s piano piece - Le Petite Âne Blanc - a cute, white donkey from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico just can’t be kept at home.
That Zucchini Song: What if that overlooked zucchini just kept growing? What if it got so large it began to take over the town? What happens when a songwriter’s imagination grows as big as a barge? A fast-paced comedy piece tracking the zucchini that got away.
John’s Blueberries: A backbeat island groove with a ukulele lead combines with a bluegrass sound in this ode to a favorite fruit and a man who planted many blueberry bushes in his day. Love can be expressed in many ways, and growing and sharing a favorite fruit is a great way to leave a legacy.
Fungus Among Us: An ear-catching singalong about a funny, fungus-y, situation - songwriter Marilyn Walker really does have a fungus named after her. Why cringe with embarrassment when you can sing with joy? Listen with caution, as this is a fungal earworm, and you’re likely to find yourself singing “There’s a fungus among us!” as you go about your day. Featuring the world’s only virtual fungus choir.
When the Sturgeon Fly: When the Sturgeon Fly is the story of a sturgeon named Fred who “...dared to ask for more, not just meant to swim, but also born to soar.” Sturgeon are ancient river fishes found throughout the world, which can grow to enormous size. They occasionally leap from the water, sometimes injuring boaters. With fun sound effects and superb storytelling, you’ll be pondering the mystery of these ancient jumpers, and wonder if Fred was indeed trying to “...make history in ichthyology.”
Octopus Octopi: The sound of steel drums and ukulele are the perfect soundtrack to a song about octopus - “the world’s smartest cephalopod.” Told from the perspective of a grandfather imagining reincarnation as an octopus, the catchy tune is cleverly loaded with good information about octopus, from their brains in their legs, their ability to change color in an instant, their 3 hearts, and more.
Pop-up Camper Van: What’s more fun than a family camping vacation in a camper van, with a magical top that pops up to create a tent? A catchy country tune with lyrics that will take you along on the trip, and a chorus that will make you want to pop up!
Morning Song: A sweet song for the morning, with a piano lead and lovely vocal harmonies, and a sparrow to sing along.
The World is Watching Over You: A deeply moving lullaby with harp and keyboard, along with flowing vocal harmonies and intertwining parts that evoke a sense of mystery. Originally written for the people of Ukraine, as a prayer for their safety, this is a lullaby for everyone wishing for a safe and peaceful night. The World is Watching Over You is gaining attention for its moving and comforting melody and lyrics in this time of global upheaval. The 125-voice Resonance Women’s Chorus is featuring the song in their Spring 2024 performance.
Toward a Brighter Day: Life brings moments that challenge us, where we can feel backed against a wall. Take a cue from Peter Pan, and take the second star to the right, straight on to morning. The melodic lift in the chorus guides the listener toward that tiny point of light that represents hope.
